We read the W/S/WS/X cleaning code on the manufacturer tag — usually tucked under a cushion — then test colorfastness in a hidden area. The code determines whether we can use water-based methods (Hot Water Extraction) or whether we need a solvent or low-moisture approach. This identify-then-clean sequence is the IICRC-standard first step on every couch and upholstery job.

“S” code means solvent only — water cannot touch the fabric. This is common on linen, some microfibers, and certain wool blends. We use dry-cleaning solvents or low-moisture methods (encapsulation or dry foam) — the result is excellent on surface and embedded soil, with no risk of water rings, shrinkage, or dye migration.

What most people call “steam cleaning” for couches and upholstery is actually Hot Water Extraction (HWE) — pressurized hot water with detergent injected into the fabric, then immediately vacuumed out. True saturated steam (water vapor at 212 °F or higher with no rinse) is a different process used mainly for mattress sanitation and hard surfaces. For couches and sofas, HWE on water-safe fabrics or low-moisture methods on sensitive fabrics is what produces the clean.
